With beautiful and rugged countryside on its doorstep, a mild winter climate and a wealth of quality sporting facilities available, Marbella is a haven for those looking for a healthy outdoor lifestyle.
Due to the nature of development in the area, where most residential zones are spread out along the coast in order to take full advantage of the town’s 27 kilometres of beaches, just a short trip—often within walking distance—is needed to be amidst the natural landscapes of this part of Andalucía.
This in turn means it is a simple matter to get out and about to enjoy the many outdoor activities available to those who live here or are visiting for a holiday. Below are five of our favourite ways to enjoy the great outdoors in Marbella…
Golfing adventures. The many emerald green golf courses that add a striking dash of colour to the hillsides of Marbella and the Costa del Sol are among the most popular draws the area has to offer. Each year tens of thousands of golfers are attracted to the town to play some of the best courses in Europe. In east Marbella we have just within a few minutes distance of the Residencia Estates office the Río Real, Santa Clara, Marbella Golf, Santa María, Cabopino and par three Greenlife Golf courses, and with the year-round sunny weather there is no excuse not to pick up a club and take to the fairways.
Treetop adventure. The Aventura Amazonia park in Elviria, behind our office, offers treetop fun for those wanting adventure in a secure environment. Popular with families, participants can climb through several sections designed with different ages in mind and launch themselves on Andalucía’s longest zip-line—a hair-raising 240 metres long!
Horse riding. Horses hold a special place in the hearts of many Andalusians, with every feria and festival featuring beautifully groomed animals and riders garbed in traditional attire. It comes as no surprise then to find equestrian schools and riding trails dotted around the Marbella landscape. One of these is Arrocha Equitacion situated on the Carretera Marbella a Coín just north of Río Real, while Los Caireles is slightly nearer Marbella town. Both these riding stables offer lessons and trekking through the beautiful rolling hills of the surrounding countryside.
Quad bikes and buggy safaris. For a change of pace that still offers a chance to explore the rural areas of Marbella, quad bike and buggy safaris are increasingly popular amongst those seeking a little adventure under the Spanish sun. The chance to pit your driving wits against the rugged Andalusian terrain while quite literally getting off the beaten track has proved irresistible to many adventure seekers and several specialist companies offering these activities have sprung up in recent years. All of their quad bikes are equipped with a roll cage, two bucket seats, and a sand rails feature. Sand rails may support anything from 800 to 1500 pounds. They weigh very little and maintain balance because of a low center of gravity.
Life on the ocean waves. Outdoor activities are not restricted to dry land—indeed it would be remiss of us not to mention some of the water sports activities available in Marbella, with the deep blue Mediterranean so tantalisingly close. While hover, paddle and fly boarding, jet skiing and parasailing are all available, they are probably best left for the warm summer months. In the meantime, boat charters for fishing or simply to enjoy a sea trip are available. In Puerto Banús Marbella Fishing Charter and Pesca en Barco provide charters, while in Cabopino Watersports offers several activities, including dolphin watching trips and Fly Board.
These five activities are just a few of the many outdoor activities available here. Whatever you enjoy you can rest assured Marbella offers it, from tennis, hiking and scuba diving to paragliding, go-karting and even clay-pigeon shooting. Why don’t you take the time to enjoy the great outdoors—you won’t regret it!
