The Caminito del Rey (Path of the King) is a terrifyingly narrow walking platform attached to the cliff side of the gorge at El Chorro in Málaga province. Just over an hour from Marbella, the 100 metre high walkway is not for the faint hearted, especially when it was in disrepair for many years, yet some still walked the walk!
This most famous of attractions, which offers stunning views down to the water below, has drawn much media attention since the renovations began to make it a usable feature again. Most exciting of all is that Lonely Planet have included it in their list of ‘World’s hottest new experiences for 2015’, coming in at number 5 of 26 things to do this year. Other attractions on the Lonely Planet list include a four-hour zip line rise in South Africa and a trip to the top of the One World Trade Centre in New York.

The walking route was originally constructed in 1905 and got its name from the fact that King Alfonso XIII walked it in 1921. However, it was officially closed in the 1990s after five people tragically lost their lives on the then dangerous pathway, whose complete reconstruction now makes it not only safe but also exhilarating.
Residents and business owners in the El Chorro area should brace themselves for an influx of visitors to the area this year. 
Not only has the Caminito been featured in Lonely Planet but the second stage of the Vuelta de España cycling race ends there. It could be a busy time for all concerned.
Being featured in an international publication has put the Caminito del Rey on the worldwide map for the first time. It will be a huge boost for the local economy when the attraction opens within the next few months, with visitors from across Spain and from all over the world traveling to not only view the walkway, but to actually walk it this year. Málaga County Council is to open El Caminito del Rey path before Easter, will you be having a go?
