Anyone living in Spain will no doubt know that the Spanish typically lead a very healthy lifestyle when it comes to eating. Apart from drizzling everything in olive oil, they are quite partial to fresh fish and in season vegetables or fruit, which traditionally play a big part of the Mediterranean diet. So it’s no surprise that a number of markets have sprung up along the Costa del Sol selling good quality produce that has been sourced locally and grown naturally. Thanks in part to the benevolent climate, both fruits and vegetables are in abundance here on the Costa del Sol, and unlike in most northern European countries, it doesn’t cost a fortune to eat healthy.
Local residents might be interested to know that there is an ecological market right on our doorstep in Elviria. It takes place every first Saturday of the month directly behind the Residencia Estates office and is organised by the Guadalhorce Ecological Association. Every month hundreds of health conscious types descend to this charming market to fill their ecologically friendly shopping bags with more fruit
than you can shake a banana at. Among the best sellers according to the organisation’s website, starting with the most popular, are: new potatoes, eggs, bananas, apples, onions, tomatoes, pumpkins, kiwis and aubergines. However, if you can’t make it down there it’s also worth noting that you can visit their website and make an online order, which is then delivered to your home.
Other produce for sale includes dried fruits, marmalades, bread and bakery products, olive oils, vinegars and desserts. Plus if you fancy a local tipple there are some great ecological beers and wines from nearby areas such as the Serranía de Ronda. So if you are trying to get into the healthy lifestyle on the Costa del Sol, why not pop down to the market to give yourself a boost and save a few euros while you are at it, you’ll find us doing our shopping there, too!
