Get those hiking boots out, wrap that sweat band around your forehead and prepare to pound some pavements, as Marbella’s biggest and most popular walking event of the year is almost upon us.
Hundreds of local residents and a couple of thousand(!) from abroad are set to lace up their shoes for the Marbella 4Days Walking programme in October, which sees those who love the great outdoors discover the most beautiful and secluded paths this town has to offer. Now in its eight year, the event starts from a new location; the Parque la la Represa near the historic centre of Marbella. From this point experienced walking aficionados lead the intrepid explorers along a number of scenic beach walks and magnificent mountain paths.
Each day walkers can choose between a 20km or 30km walk, with most taking part to improve their fitness or raise money for local charities. However, it’s also a great way to meet new friends from a multitude of different nationalities, as the walkers reflect the cosmopolitan nature of Marbella. What’s more, thanks to the sunny year-round climate here, the weather in October is perfect for walking, as it is neither too hot, nor too cold. In addition to the walking there will be live music every day in the port from 12pm to 5pm and special discounted menus in many local restaurants, bars and shops for those taking part.
The walks start at 9am or 9.30am in the morning, with participants generally returning around 2pm, before receiving a medal and gladiolus on the last day. So, why the gladiolus? The name is derived from the Latin word ‘gladius’ meaning sword, after the sword-like shape of the flower. The gladiolus has become a sign of strength and victory; a flower earned after a great achievement!
This year the event takes place from Thursday the 11th of October to Sunday the 14th of October.
