Think of Marbella and sunny beaches, poolside relaxing, and outdoor dining come to mind, but as those of us who live here know, it’s also a great place to be in the winter.
If you like a gentler pace of life accompanied by a soft climate, you’ll enjoy Marbella in the winter. The heat of summer is gone but the days are still mostly sunny and mild. The leaves turn golden yellow and the late afternoon light casts the world in a golden glow that makes this beautiful coastal region look even more appealing. It’s a great time of year to cycle, walk the dog or stroll along the coastal pathway, not to mention partake of café society in a charming square, but a lot of people also make use of the end of the summer holiday season to get around more and explore the many fantastic sites that exist all around Marbella.
You can head into the nearby hills and cycle, mountain bike, hike or simply enjoy a long walk. Once again, the dog will love it, and it’s just the thing to get you in a seasonal mood. Christmas shopping is also fun this time of year, be it at the malls and the El Corte Ingles department store, the charming shops in the old town or at one of the many Christmas fairs organised from Mid-November onwards. Marbella’s very own theatre is the place to enjoy some culture and watch ballet, opera or classical music, while there are also amateur groups across the coast that put on pantomime and other theatrical shows.
Or how about a visit to one of the many bodegas in Ronda, as we did two years ago in the snow! Or a workshop in a goat cheese factory, as we did last week. Another great one is a bicycle tour in & around the centre of Málaga. And, the skie slopes of the Sierra Nevada are only two hours away… Or pack everything in one week, like we did; climbing, skiing, golfing, horseriding, biking, eating & drinking. We love where we live!
Dining is another thing that stands out during the winter, and where the beach is the main focus in summer now we head to traditional Spanish restaurants in town and in the surrounding countryside. They offer delicious country food, sometimes traditional and sometimes with a modern twist, but it’s the ideal midway stop for going inland and exploring country towns such as Ronda, pretty mountain villages, abundant natural scenery and perhaps even historic gems such as Granada and Sevilla.
