Cervantes said that “one ounce of good reputation is worth more than a pound of pearls”. Puerto Banús has not only the ounce and the pound, but also the reputation and the pearls. This is the most luxurious corner of Andalusia, which is why more than 5 million people visit every year. Although…there are no statistics as to how many of these visitors are actually celebrities.
Puerto Banús was destined to be a golden project, hosting many rich and famous celebrities. It all began more than 40 years ago in José Banús’s mind.
An experienced constructor favoured by the regime, was able to visualise the possibilities there were open of an estate called The Nueva Andalucia Tourism Park, with The Rio Verde and the Guadaiza Rivers, the majestic Concha Mountain as a backdrop and a perfect micro climate “a la carte”.
This project needed to be set up in a very short time, without sparing any costs, to create the most impressive marina on the coast, as well as a Casino and a Bullring. The job was carried out by the Swiss Architect Noldi Schreck, who was already experienced with jobs requiring an ethnic feel – a style which he was able to stamp on Puerto Banús. You could say the result was “Andalusian Chic”, giving the feel of a small whitewashed village, with railed balconies and narrow streets and yet at the same time giving an impression of being an exclusive area.
The marina offers 915 moorings for yachts of up to 50 metres long, to be perfectly stored from inclemency. There are more than 250 establishments, among which some of the most prestigious brand names as well as an array of varied and exquisite gastronomy.
Of course, as it would be expected Puerto Banús had a magnificent opening with all the pomposity of 1970 and was attended by first line celebrities, such as the Princes of Asturias and other members of the Royal Family. Julio Iglesias performed and kilos of caviar were served.
You don’t have to go to Sunset Boulevard to step on the same piece of ground that so many stars have walked on. In any corner, especially in summer, the spirit of Puerto Banús can be felt. This is a catwalk for the rich and famous, yachts, cars, shops, restaurants, nightclubs and beautiful people.
For those who would like a more relaxing wander, there’s plenty of space to explore. It’s always the right time to have an aperitif on a terrace or to wander around the shops without having to rush, or maybe to browse the market stalls in Antonio Banderas Square or to visit the Saturday morning market. You could also take a walk along the magnificent wide seafront promenade which takes you to a 70 metre long footbridge, opened in 2010 connecting you to Marbella seafront promenade. On your way, those interested can enjoy seeing the Victoria Statue, the rhinoceros dressed in lace by Dalí or the Sun Clock in the shape of a boat.
