The beautiful sandy beaches of Marbella instil a yearning to simply lounge by the Mediterranean while observing the world going by. However, there is much more to this unique part of the world than relaxation alone.
Indeed, more and more fans of endurance sports are discovering the wealth of more intense activities available in Marbella and its surroundings.
For athletes and spectators alike, the weekend of 29 – 30 April 2018 was a thrilling date for the diary, when Marbella saw its inaugural Ironman 70,3 take place. The fourth such event in Spain, endurance sports have been gaining popularity in recent years and the organisers were no doubt delighted to see registration completely sold out. The race involved competitors undertaking a 1,9 kilometre swim in the Mediterranean, followed by a challenging 90-kilometre bike ride through Monda, Coín and Cártama before returning to run 21 kilometres in two laps of the famous Marbella beachfront promenade. The first Marbella Ironman 70.3 was made more difficult by the heat, paired with gusty winds. British athlete David McNamee was the first across the line, while the first woman was the German, Laura Philipp.
For a somewhat less challenging yet just as exhilarating day out, adventure lovers can opt to climb La Concha, the picturesque mountain that acts as a backdrop to the Mediterranean resort town of Marbella. The route is signposted and well-travelled by intrepid hikers who want to challenge themselves alone, while another option is to join one of the local groups that regularly undertake the climb. The latter offer the advantage of experienced guides and insurance to cover all eventualities, and the reward for the exertion is a spectacular panorama of the entire coast to Africa and Gibraltar. Before setting off, take note of weather conditions and don’t forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!
If two-wheeled transport is more your style, there are endless trails above the La Quinta urbanisation that offer adrenaline-charged rides surrounded by the beauty of pine-clad Andalusian hills. Some of these trails will take you as far as Ronda, and they offer a real test of endurance for mountain-bike enthusiasts.
