Mijas’ town hall has announced that it is to launch a region-wide tapas contest on the 15th of March 2015 where the best chefs from all over Andalucía will be invited to take part in a competition designed to find the region’s best tapa.
The contest will be a spinoff of the successful local tapas competition held by the town hall every June, which allows both professional chefs as well as enthusiastic amateurs to try their hand at concocting a winning tapa dish of their creation. This first edition of the Ciudad de Mijas, Tapas Contest of Andalucía will be open to all professionals in the restaurant and catering industry, and will provide a great platform for up-and-coming chefs to showcase their talent alongside some of the region’s stars of gastronomy.
All participants will be invited to present their proposed entries to the board of judges and the admissions will then be whittled down to a shortlist for the final event.
The final, which will be held at Las Lagunas Theatre, Mijas, is set to be the backdrop of a superb celebration of gastronomy, with local bars and restaurants (who have signed up as sponsors) adding the winning tapa to their menus. This wonderful idea will enable the general public to enjoy some delectable cuisine and entice people from all over Andalucía to get involved and support this exciting new competition.
The winning chef not only receives a substantial cash prize (the town hall is yet to confirm the exact figure) but will also have a chance to compete in the National Pinchos and Tapas Competition in Valladolid.
This venture by the Ayuntamiento de Mijas is set to put the town on the map as a centre of gastronomy, and will no doubt bring food-lovers and gourmet critics from far and wide to sample some of the delicious fare in this pretty village, which provides such a wonderful backdrop to a gastronomic feast.
