Marbella is not only spoiled for choice of things to do during the summer months; there is also a wide selection of attractions and activities that are located within a short drive from the coastal city itself—perfect for when the temperature is a little cooler. Here are a few of our favourite attractions and activities to keep you entertained in winter ranging from skiing and snowboarding to shopping and cultural attractions:
Skiing in Sierra Nevada
Located just over two hours’ drive from Marbella, the ski resort of Sierra Nevada makes for the perfect day trip for those who are looking for a festive fun filled day out. The family friendly resort offers activities and facilities for everyone, from professional skiers and snowboarders to complete beginners and children. Snow has fallen early this year at the sunny resort, making it possible to enjoy an active day out in the sun and snow before the busy holiday season really kicks off.
Culture in Granada
Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the city of Granada is renowned for its medieval architecture, most notably the Alhambra, one of Spain’s most iconic tourist attractions. The Arabic palace is a striking sight come day or night and makes for a remarkable photographic opportunity. The university city of Granada is also home to many quirky bars, second hand book stores and trendy boutique clothing stores. Its hip vibe makes for the perfect day trip or weekend break for those looking to experience a little culture at affordable prices – many of the bars here offer free tapas with your drink and there is also a fun year round tapas trail around the city.
Shopping in Málaga
Whether you are looking for a unique Christmas gift, to treat yourself in the sales or to simply window shop, there is no better city in Andalucía than Málaga for shopping. Set at the heart of the old quarter, the renowned Calle Larios is the perfect place to start: here you can admire the impressive display of Christmas lights, enjoy carol singers and sample roasted chestnuts while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. It is also here that you will find all of Spain’s major retailers, including Mango, Zara and Massimo Dutti, as well as boutiques selling quality leather goods. Located a short walk from the Calle Larios is Malaga’s chic port, where designer outlets line the waterfront open-air mall, that features a special Christmas market during the festive months. My friend recently also found a wonderful Petworth shop (which you can see at https://tallulahfox.co.uk/) and it’s just a joyous collection of fabulous items, so take a look.
A visit to El Torcal
El Torcal de Antequera lies about 30km north of Málaga city. It is a natural park composed of majestic and dramatic limestone formations that were submerged beneath the sea until some 100 million years ago. As a result, El Torcal is without doubt, and many travel writers agree, one of the eeriest and most “spectacular examples of limestone scenery found anywhere in Europe.”
